What Is a Tile Quantity Calculator?
A tile quantity calculator is a planning tool that divides the net area to be tiled by the face area of one tile. It then applies the selected allowance for cutting, breakage, pattern requirements and spare tiles before rounding upward to a purchasable whole quantity.
When tiles are supplied only in complete boxes, the required tile quantity must be converted into full boxes. This may provide more tiles than the calculated requirement, and the difference is shown as surplus tiles. That surplus can be retained for replacement work, provided it is stored safely and remains suitable for future use.

5. Wastage or Spare Allowance

6. Tiles per Box

Tile Quantity Calculation Formulas
Step 1: Convert the Dimensions to a Common Unit
Feet to metres: Length in metres = Length in feet × 0.3048
Square feet to square metres: Area in m² = Area in sq ft × 0.09290304
Millimetres to metres: Length in metres = Length in mm ÷ 1,000
Centimetres to metres: Length in metres = Length in cm ÷ 100
Inches to metres: Length in metres = Length in inches × 0.0254
The calculator performs its internal area calculations in square metres and also displays the resulting areas in square feet.
Step 2: Calculate Gross Surface Area
Gross Surface Area = Surface Length × Surface Width or Tiling Height
Step 3: Deduct Untiled or Opening Areas
Net Tiled Area = Gross Surface Area − Total Untiled or Opening Area
The deduction must be smaller than the gross area. Do not deduct a small penetration automatically when the surrounding cuts will still consume approximately the same tiles.
Step 4: Calculate the Area of One Tile
Area of One Tile = Tile Length × Tile Width
Step 5: Calculate Tiles Before Wastage
Calculated Tiles = Net Tiled Area ÷ Area of One Tile
This theoretical result may contain a decimal. The calculator separately displays the next whole-tile quantity before applying the selected wastage allowance.
Step 6: Apply Wastage and Round Upward
Final Tiles = Calculated Tiles × (1 + Wastage Percentage ÷ 100)
The calculator applies the percentage to the unrounded theoretical quantity and then rounds the result up to the next whole tile. Rounding upward prevents a fractional tile from being treated as a purchasable complete unit.
Step 7: Calculate Full Boxes
Boxes Required = Final Tiles ÷ Tiles per Box
Tiles Supplied = Full Boxes Required × Tiles per Box
Surplus Tiles = Tiles Supplied − Final Tiles Required
Boxes are always rounded up to the next complete box because partial boxes may not be available for purchase.
Step 8: Estimate Tile-Material Cost
When priced per box: Estimated Cost = Full Boxes Required × Price per Box
When priced per tile: Estimated Cost = Payable Tile Quantity × Price per Tile
If tiles per box are entered, the per-tile cost is applied to all tiles supplied in the calculated full boxes. If packaging is not entered, it is applied to the final required tile quantity.

How to Measure Floor Tile Area
Rectangular Floor
Floor Area = Floor Length × Floor Width
Measure between the finished boundaries of the area that will receive tiles. Use the same length unit for both dimensions.
L-Shaped or Irregular Floor
Divide the floor into non-overlapping rectangles, calculate each area separately and add the results. Run the calculator for each tile type or layout zone when different products are used. Avoid counting an overlapping rectangle twice.

How to Measure Wall Tile Area
For one wall, multiply the wall length by the intended tiling height and deduct any clearly untiled openings. For several walls of the same height, add their lengths first and use the combined length in the calculator.
Gross Wall Tiling Area = Combined Wall Length × Tiling Height
Net Wall Tiling Area = Gross Wall Tiling Area − Doors, Windows and Other Untiled Areas
Practical measurement note: If only part of a wall receives tiles, use the actual tiling height rather than the full floor-to-ceiling height. Measure each wall separately when tiling heights differ.
Selecting a Wastage Allowance
The allowance should be selected after considering tile layout, room geometry, tile size, cutting, breakage risk, workmanship, batch availability and whether spare tiles will be retained. The following ranges are planning guidance only; they are not universal standards.

The calculator can estimate tiles for bathroom walls, kitchen walls, utility areas, feature walls and other wall-cladding applications.
For one wall, enter its length and intended tiling height. For several walls with the same tiling height, add their lengths and enter the combined length. Deduct doors, windows and other areas that will clearly remain untiled.
Example: Wall Tile Calculation
Assume the following inputs:

- Tiling height = 10 ft

This example does not account for a shower recess, raised platform or another separately tiled zone. Calculate such areas independently when necessary.
Kitchen Tile Calculator
Use the calculator for kitchen floors, backsplashes, dado tiles, utility walls and other tiled kitchen surfaces.
For a backsplash, measure only the actual length and height that will receive tiles. Deduct large untiled areas, but consider whether small electrical outlets will simply create cuts rather than save a complete tile.

Assume the following inputs:
- Backsplash length = 10 ft
- Backsplash height = 2 ft
- Backsplash area = 20 sq ft

Tile Box Calculator and Full-Box Ordering
Tiles are commonly supplied in complete boxes. Enter the actual number of tiles per box printed on the selected product packaging.
Boxes Required = Final Tile Quantity ÷ Tiles per Box
Always round the result up to the next complete box when partial boxes are unavailable.
Example: Tile Box Calculation
Assume:
- Final tiles required = 83
- Tiles per box = 8
Boxes required = 83 ÷ 8 = 10.375 boxes
Round upward = 11 boxes
Tiles supplied = 11 × 8 = 88 tiles
Surplus after full-box purchase = 88 − 83 = 5 tiles

Batch-control note: Where shade, colour, texture or calibre may vary, obtain sufficient tiles from the same production batch. Tiles purchased later may not match the original installation.

The calculator can estimate tile-material cost using either a price per tile or a price per box.
Cost per Tile Formula
Estimated Tile Cost = Payable Tile Quantity × Price per Tile
When tiles-per-box information is entered, the payable quantity includes all tiles supplied in the calculated full boxes. Without box information, the price is applied to the final required tile quantity.
Example: Cost per Tile
Assume:
- Payable tile quantity = 60 tiles
- Price per tile = $3
Estimated tile-material cost = 60 × $3 = $180
Therefore, the estimated tile-material cost is $180.
Cost per Box Formula
Estimated Tile Cost = Full Boxes Required × Price per Box

The currency symbol selected by the user is applied to the entered price. The calculator does not convert one currency into another.

Special Measurement Situations
Stairs, Skirting and Narrow Bands
Measure treads, risers, landings and skirting strips separately. An area-only result may underestimate cutting loss where narrow strips are produced from larger tiles, so confirm the cutting schedule with the installer.
Mosaics and Sheet-Mounted Products
Treat the complete sheet as the tile unit and enter the sheet length and width. Do not enter the dimensions of an individual mosaic piece unless pieces are purchased individually.
Large-Format or Patterned Tiles
Large-format tiles, book-matched patterns, directional graphics and borders can require a layout-specific allowance. Review setting-out, joint alignment, pattern continuity and handling risk before ordering.
Grout Joints and Manufacturer Coverage
