Civil Engineering Learning Platform: From Theory to Construction Practice
Concrete mix design is the systematic process of selecting and proportioning cement, water, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, admixtures and supplementary cementitious materials to produce concrete with the required strength, workability, durability and economy.
This Concrete Mix Design learning hub explains the complete process from basic principles to construction-site application. It covers nominal mix, design mix, concrete grades from M10 to M60, target mean strength, water-cement ratio, material testing, aggregate proportioning, trial mixes, moisture correction, admixture control, batching, cube testing and quality assurance.
M10 to M20 topics include nominal-mix concepts where permitted by project requirements. For design-mix concrete, proportions should be established using project-specific requirements, actual material properties, calculations, laboratory trials and approval. The final proportions depend on factors such as cementitious materials, aggregate grading, specific gravity, water absorption, aggregate moisture, required workability, exposure condition, admixture performance and trial-mix results.

How to Use the Grade-Wise Mix Design Examples
The grade-wise examples on this website are worked learning examples and should not be treated as universal concrete mix ratios. A concrete grade such as M25, M30 or M40 does not have one fixed design-mix proportion that can be used for every project.
The actual quantities of cementitious material, water, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and admixture depend on the properties of the materials being used, the required workability, durability requirements, exposure condition, aggregate grading, specific gravity, water absorption, moisture condition, method of placing and results of laboratory trial mixes.
For preliminary project-specific proportioning, use the Concrete Mix Design Calculator as per IS 10262:2019. The calculated proportions should then be checked and adjusted through laboratory trial mixes, workability testing, strength testing and project approval before being adopted for production concrete.
Concrete Mix Design Topics We Will Cover
This learning hub will progressively cover the complete concrete mix-design workflow, including target mean strength, standard deviation, water-cement ratio, material testing, aggregate proportioning, cementitious-material selection, admixture use, moisture correction, trial-mix adjustment, concrete production and quality control.
Additional detailed guides will be linked here as they are published so that students, site engineers, QA/QC engineers, laboratory technicians and other construction professionals can follow the complete process from material testing to an approved concrete mix.
Important: The information provided in this hub is intended for educational and preliminary engineering reference. Always verify the current applicable standards, project specifications, approved drawings, material test results and approved concrete mix design before using any proportion for actual construction.
